OK - so Im no stranger to Joomla - Im on my 7th Joomla site now and Ive never come across this problem before and it has me rather perplexed. Im hoping someone will have knowledge of this and can give me the magic solution.

I have J 1.5.7 using University template in legacy mode, the site is almost completed and Ive had no problems what-so-ever.
Yesterday I went to upload some images, only media manager wasnt letting me - when I click on \Browse files\ nothing happens. Not a problem - I can just upload them via my FTP.
Which I did. Only when I go to place them in an article I can see them listed in the images folder but when I insert them all that shows up is an image of the file name!!
Example
treehugger_is_ace.jpg
But it has been treated as an image!!
Strange huh!
I also noticed that it doesnt show the image dimension in the upload section.
All images that were uploaded before yesterday work fine and dandy like they should.
The only changes I have made since uploading images successfully is to have installed a new component.
AHA! I hear you cry.
So I uninstalled said component but the problem is still there!!!

I am completely stumped so if anyone can offer some advice I will be extremely grateful - Im working on a deadline here and I have a couple of days to get this site live!!!

*deep breaths*

I am not stressed.........

1st why do you run legacy ? 2nd it seems that you host switched something on the server , could be permissions or php settings, got to admin - Help = system info , tab Directory Permissions check if everything is ok and green

I cant remember the reason why its in Legacy mode but I know there is one - lol. Sorry - heads a bit frazzled.
I have sussed it out but I dont know why this is the solution or even what the problem was caused by in the first place!
Its just all very strange - maybe a bug or something but I cant believe no-one else has reported a similar problem before now.
Even though the images I was trying to use were of the .jpg file extension I had to manually type in the .jpg locally and then upload them.
I hope Im explaining myself well. I posted the same query over at joomla.org and have had a few responses. Someone saying that they have the same problem and someone else saying it is an error in template file - which Im not convinced about because, as I said - this problem only started happening yesterday and I have been working on this site for weeks.

Weirder and weirder huh!

All my permissions are writable Neo.

ok , template has nothing to do with editor images or any other images but the ones from template itself, the extensions like jpg do differ , sometimes when you work in image editors saving file might add JPG instead jpg , on linux servers this is a huge difference, so try to explain again but do not go in to many details, you are trying to upload image trough media manager and than , pick image name flower.jpg , once uploaded the file name changes to flower is that what is going on ?

No not quite. The image is saved locally as .jpg and uploaded to my site with this same .jpg extension (like I have always done it).
Media Manager is not recognising the image AT ALL and when I try to insert the image in an article, for instance, all that shows up is this:

Here you can see estates.jpg which is the image giving me all the trouble.

And here - saved as estates.jpg.jpg and it is working fine!!!

I already tried that - the images only work with the double .jpg extension!!
It is a mystery but I suppose I should be just happy with the fact that they ARE working now - I just think its all strange.
